Hi, I’m Akosoa!

I am a Research Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker, and Professor. I have over 30 years of experience, conducting research on quality early childhood education, the intersection of HIV, Substance Abuse, and Domestic violence, and the prevalence of traumatic brain injuries among survivors of intimate partner violence. I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Austin Peay State University. I have a Master of Science in Research Psychology (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and a Master of Social Work (Howard University). I earned my PhD in Social Work from Howard University with an emphasis on Intimate Partner Violence and Traumatic Brain Injuries.

My approach to therapy is eclectic and intersectional. I provide psychotherapy from a culturally-centered approach that encompasses Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Family Systems Approaches. “My goal is to empower my clients with tools to manage their emotions, improve communication, and build resilient and healthy relationships. I provide individual, couples, and family therapy, giving clients the opportunity to grow in a supportive, collaborative environment”.

I specialize in supporting survivors of relationship violence, sexual assault, and trauma. I offer trauma-informed approaches that are rooted in cultural-humility and evidence-based research. My approach can also include spiritual guidance that promote healing and wholeness from within.
